Police have named the man who died when the van he was driving crashed off a bridge in Tauranga.

Gregory Mark Woledge, 24, from Tauranga, was killed when his Toyota van collided with a Mitsubishi car on the Mangatapu Bridge on Monday night.

Divers located Mr Woledge's body in the submerged van's wreckage yesterday morning.

A male passenger, aged in his 20s, managed to escape the van with the help of Constable Deane O'Connor.

Police said that Mr O'Connor is a member of the Strategic Traffic Unit at the Western Bay of Plenty Police.

"He is a modest man and the enormity of Monday's events is not lost on him. He is taking some time to reflect on what occurred," Communications Manager Kim Perks said today.

A man and a woman in their 30s, and a man in his 40s, were in the two vehicles that remained on the bridge.

They were taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash and are still keen to hear from any witnesses.
