There are grave concerns for a 72-year-old skier missing on a ski field in Wanaka, police say.

Wanaka police and Wanaka land search and rescue personnel have set-off to search for the skier this morning.

Police say the current temperature on Treble Cone is minus one degrees celcius.

The man failed to meet his bus ride down from Treble Cone ski field yesterday afternoon.

Wanaka police SAR incident controller, Senior Constable Mike Johnston said it is believed that the missing man was skiing alone.

The visibility during the day was poor and could have contributed to him getting lost or injured, police said.

Inquiries by Treble Cone management and police have eliminated the possibility that he took another ride off the ski field.

A ground search by Treble Cone ski patrol, and an aerial search by Aspiring Helicopters and manned by Land SAR members failed to locate any sign of the man before dark.

The search continued overnight using a Heliworks helicopter and night vision equipment as well as a ground team.

Further SAR teams are on standby for the morning if required, police said.
