Police need more witnesses to bridge crash - MSN NZ News

Police say they have a better idea what caused a fatal three-car crash in which a van plunged from a bridge into Tauranga Harbour on Monday, but they need more witnesses.

The smash occurred about 6pm on Monday when the vehicles collided, sending the van off the side of the Maungatapu Causeway Bridge.

A heroic police officer stripped off soon after arriving at the scene, and dived into the chilly water to rescue the van's passenger, aged in his 20s, but the driver of the van died.

Police say early indications were that a Mitsubishi travelling east drifted across the centre line, colliding with a Toyota van which then plunged into the five-metre deep water.

The Mitsubishi spun and was struck by another car which had been travelling behind it.

The male driver of the Mitsubishi and a man and a woman from the third vehicle received minor to moderate injuries, while the police officer and the person he rescued were both treated in hospital with hypothermia.

The van, with the body of the driver inside, was recovered from the water on Tuesday.

Police said they still wanted to speak to other witnesses to the crash.

Tauranga police area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton said he was proud of the officer's actions.

"What he did was pretty outstanding. He evaluated the situation, believed he could make a difference, and clearly he did make a difference."
