Police will begin a full scene examination this morning after an armed man was arrested over attempting to stop firefighters dousing a blaze on the Kaimai Ranges.

The man wielded an unknown weapon and prevented both police and the fire service from putting out the house fire on Ruahihi Road, in the Bay of Plenty, last night.

The Tauranga Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) were called to assist in taking the man into custody for his own safety, police said.

Once detained, he was treated for burns to his torso and hands, as well as lacerations to his wrists and throat.

Firefighters were then able to work on containing the fire.

Police placed a guard at the scene of the blaze overnight, while the man was treated at Tauranga Hospital.

Police on patrol in the ranges were first alerted to the fire by a member of the public at around 4.30pm. It was earlier described as large, and located at a property near State Highway 29.
