Autopsy for man found on Chch riverbank - MSN NZ News

Police hope an autopsy will reveal if man found on a Christchurch riverbank died in suspicious circumstances.

A member of the public found the man's body alongside the Heathcote River in Woolston, 5km southeast of the city centre, about 9am on Friday.

An autopsy is due to take place on Saturday afternoon.

"Once that is concluded we may be in a better position to understand the circumstances of this incident," Detective Senior Sergeant Brian Archer said on Friday.

"At this stage we do not know what has occurred and we can't speculate on whether the death is suspicious."

Police believe the man lived locally but are not releasing details until he has been formally identified and his next-of-kin notified, Det Sen Sgt Archer said.

Police investigating in the area are talking with someone believed to have been with the man on Thursday night.
