Alert levels raised at White Island - MSN NZ News

The alert level for White Island off the Bay of Plenty coast has been upgraded following a plume of smoke erupting from the volcano.

GNS Science says there was a 10-minute eruption at 10.34am, mainly producing steam.

It lifted the volcanic alert level from 1 to 2, or minor eruptive activity. The scale runs from 0 to 5.

The aviation colour code was lifted from green to red, meaning an eruption is forecast to be imminent and significant ash could be emitted.

According to reports, Whakatane residents could see the plume rising about 2km into the sky on Tuesday morning.

Earlier this month, GNS Science said that minor activity in White Island's main crater had declined.

Unrest at White Island began in July 2012 and led to explosive eruptions and ash emissions in August.

A small lava extrusion in the main crater occurred in November, followed by steam driven activity in December continued through to January and February this year.
